12-Year-Old Child Shot in South Eastlake
The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a shooting in the South Eastlake Community that left a 12-year-old child in critical condition. The incident occurred on Friday, January 5, 2024. At around 6:30 p.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to a Shot Spotter Alert in the 8300 Block of Division Avenue. Officers were updated a child was shot at a residence in the 8300 Block of 1st Avenue South.
Officers arrived at the scene in the 8300 Block of Division Avenue when they located multiple shell casings in the roadway. An East Precinct officer arrived at the residence in the 8300 Block of 1st Avenue South when he located a 12-year-old boy suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported the 12-year-old child to Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
NOTE: the victim remains hospitalized; he is in critical but stable condition.
The preliminary investigation has revealed an unknown suspect(s) fired shots into an occupied residence in the 8300 Block of Division Avenue. The shooting was a possible drive-by-shooting. We believe one or more of the suspect’s rounds traveled into the victim’s residence in the 8300 Block of 1st Avenue South, which is one block away from where the shots were fired. The victim was caught in the crossfire. There is no one in custody.
