The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation following a shooting that occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.The victim’s identity will be released pending family notification.Shortly after 6:20 p.m., West Precinct officers were dispatched to the 5900 Block of Jesse Owens Avenue on a report of a person shot.

When officers arrived on scene, they observed an adult male lying unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived on scene and pronounced the victim deceased. The preliminary investigation has revealed that two adult males were involved in a verbal altercation, which resulted in one male firing shots, fatally wounding the victim. The suspect is in custody and has been placed on a 48-hour felony extension pending formal charges.
