The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation following a shooting that occurred on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

The victim has been identified as:
Destiny Lawson, (17), Blk/Female, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Just before 10:30 p.m., West Precinct officers responded to the 100 block of 17th Street Southwest on a report of a Person Shot.
Upon arrival, officers entered the residence and located a young female victim lying unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

Preliminary information suggests the victim was visiting the residence and was inside with multiple individuals at the time of the incident. Investigators believe an individual was handling a firearm when it discharged, striking the victim and causing fatal injuries. Following the shooting, the suspected shooter fled the scene.
At this time, the investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been made. Detectives are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
