The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, December 10, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:
Quantez Banks, (32), B/M, of Center Point, Alabama.

At approximately 2:45 a.m., South Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call at Mel’s Lounge, which is located at 3921 Richard Arrington Junior Boulevard North.
Officers arrived on the scene and then entered the lounge when they observed the victim lying unresponsive suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was involved in a verbal argument with an adult male. The adult male shot the victim then fled the scene. Responding patrol officers took the suspect into custody near Mel’s Lounge; officers transported the suspect to BPD Headquarters where BPD Homicide detectives interviewed him. The suspect was booked into the Birmingham City Jail under a 48-Hour Felony Extension for Murder.
